Good teacher

Good teacher is a quite easy word to say or talking about. However to practice it that another part or difficult part, depend on experience of the teacher and the teaching styles. The important thing is the students must achieve the aims/goals of the learning activities. In another word a good teacher is a person that can meet an intentional action designed of teaching and process of learning together.

Good teacher should show good things in term of attitude to the students. As far as concern, teachers and parents is a role model for students and children. Whatever teachers and parents did, always observed by them directly or indirectly. A good example is if we want to tell our students not to come late, as a teacher we must come early. Teacher also must always smart looking in term of dressing. Teacher must give students a good self-image.

Good teacher should have good communication skills. Teacher must be able to connect themselves to their students, their student to each other, and everyone to the subject being studied. Teacher may give group assignment to their students. The students working as a team in collaborative learning with emphasizes on sharing knowledge rather than individual/personal competition.

Good teacher must play a role as a facilitator. Teacher should be facilitating the students to learn not dispensing the knowledge. Teacher should guide the student when they are not in the right track. This condition will encourage students to explore deep in term of knowledge interested.

Good teacher have a characteristic of a good planner. The planning must focus on both long-term and short-term. Teacher should plan the course content and activities to teach learners not only a subject matter. The students should be monitor and assess continuously by giving assignment, formative and summative examination.

Good teachers are able to tolerate the mistake or the weakness of students. The teacher must accept that all the students have a different range of mind capability and different styles of learning. A good teacher should accept all the students’ opinion including incorrect answer but later on responds or modified/altered the answer appropriately to the other/different angle.

Good teachers are creative and innovative in term of preparing the material of teaching and learning. The teachers must try to use the combination of material in teaching and learning process. If the material for teaching and learning is limited, the teacher should make a variety of that single material. Like only power point presentation can be presented in different way such as moving picture, and some sort of animation rather than just showing the words that can make ‘blurring vision’ to the students.

Good teachers must have a sense of humor. A classroom becomes ‘dull’ without sense of humor from the teacher. Sometimes the teacher have to create a joke to attract the student and making them feel enjoy in the learning process. The students also will feel that the teacher is friendly. This condition will promote two ways learning and encourage students to be active participants in teaching and learning process. Teacher also able to assess the students immediately whether understand the content or not. If there is a misperception or misunderstanding in the topic, teacher must respond appropriately.

Good teacher also must be a flexible person. The teacher should allow the learners decided themselves what they want to learn. Teacher will let the students choose the topic they like, how to learn and how to assess. A good example is in contract learning, portfolio, etc. Student will learn best what they want and need to know.

Good teacher have a good judgment. Teacher must avoid ‘halo effect’ and not practice double standard to their students. As a humanistic factor sometimes teacher tend to give high marks to the students that he/she feel ‘good’. However some students will get low marks because he/she feel that the student ‘not good’ even though the student deserve to get a better mark. The teacher should ignore the background of the student either from rich/poor family, different categories, or even the gender issue.

In conclusion a good teacher is a person that the students like to see, deal, and discuss with them. Good teachers are always take full responsibility and accountability to whatever he/she doing in term of educational practitioner. A good teacher also will produce not only a good students, but may produce students that better than teacher itself.
